THE WORKING
PIT BULL: By
Diane Jessup 317
pages, hardback.
ISBN #
0-7938-0190-7
This book was
written when the
only books
available on the
breed pictured
beat-up looking
dogs on heavy
chains while the
author extolled
the virtues of
pit bulls as
tools for
maiming and
destroying other
dogs. In the
battle against
BSL, these books
were and are
being used
against the
breed. In an
effort to get
something
positive
published and in
the hands of law
makers and
humane officers,
Diane Jessup
quickly produced
The Working Pit
Bull. This book
points out how
the breed, in
responsible
hands, can be so
much more. TWPB
has tons of
color pictures
of dogs working
and playing and
is a book to
show to people
who say the pit
bull is only
good for
fighting. Those
who are looking
for ways to help
the breed should
consider
donating one to
their local
library. |

COLBY'S BOOK
OF THE AMERICAN
PIT BULL
TERRIER:
by Louis Colby
and Diane Jessup
192 pages,
hardback. ISBN#
0-7938-2091-X A
classic
for history
buffs! Louis
Colby's love and
knowledge of the
history of this
breed makes this
book special. If
you love
pictures of
old-time dogs
you will love
this book.
Interesting
history of the
Colby family; at
one time the
Colby family was
associated with
dog fighting,
however these
days the dogs
are finding
homes with folks
who want a good
natured family
pet with an
interesting
history.
This should be
required reading
for people
becoming
involved with
the breed today
- this book
shows them what
a "real" pit
bull looks like.

THE DOG WHO
SPOKE WITH GODS:
by Diane
Jessup 384 pages
Hardback/soft
cover.
ISBN#
0-312-26662-6
Fast paced novel
that reads like
a thriller.
Features a pit
bull as the main
character. If
you love
a dog, you'll
love this book.
Winner of a
national award
for Best
Human/Animal
Bond. A story of
trust, betrayal
and the bonds of
friendship. A
plea from the
author (me)
PLEASE don't
skip to the end,
don't quit and
don't read the
"discussion
questions" on
the last page as
it gives the
frickin' plot
away! (sheesh!)
A tough book,
but most people
seem to think it
is worth the
ride it takes
you on.

Fully Bully
Magazine:
( from Working
Pit Bull
website) Due to
increasing price
of the magazine
being produced
through
Cafepress.com, I
no longer feel
that it can be
offered at a
reasonable
price. With me
only making 60
cents per issue
it is still over
$13!!! and that
is just
ridiculous. At
this time FBM
will complete
its run with
issue #15. You
will still be
able to purchase
back issues and
downloads. I
have enjoyed
very much the
chance to share
the positive
issues of bull
breed ownership
with others. The
American pit
bull breed
deserves a
positive
magazine to
chronicle its
many activities.
I have made my
stab at it, and
I encourage
others to give
it a try. At
this time my
energy is better
spent with the
LawDogs program.
Thanks for the
support folks,
it was fun. |

The Pit Bull
Placebo:The
Media, Myths and
Politics of
Canine
Aggression:
by Karen
Delise
The book, The
Pit Bull
Placebo: The
Media, Myths and
Politics of
Canine
Aggression,
explores and
reveals how our
views and
beliefs about
canine
aggression have
changed over the
last 150 years
and how our
perceptions
about the nature
and behavior of
dogs has been
influenced and
shaped by
persons and
organizations
who often times
disseminate
information
about dog
attacks which is
tailored to
further an
agenda unrelated
to the
improvement of
the human/dog
bond.
The Pit Bull
Placebo
examines actual
cases of severe
dog attacks
during the last
150 years—the
circumstances,
the individual
dogs involved,
the victims, and
our
interpretations
of these
events—in an
attempt to offer
a reasoned and
balanced
perspective on
the behavior of
dogs and the
critical role
humans play in
the management
and treatment of
our canine
companions. |

DOGS BITE: But
balloons and
slippers are
more dangerous:
Dogs can be
dangerous. And
they are more
dangerous to
children than to
adults. But
here's the
reality. Dogs
almost never
kill people. A
child is more
likely to die
choking on a
marble or a
balloon, and an
adult is more
likely to die in
a bedroom
slipper related
accident. Your
chances of being
killed by a dog
a roughly one in
18 million. You
are five times
more likely to
be killed by a
bolt of
lightning.
The supposed
epidemic numbers
of dog bites
splashed across
the media are
absurdly
inflated by
dubious research
and by counting
bites that don't
actually hurt
anyone. Even
when dogs do
injure people,
the vast
majority of
injuries are at
the Band-Aid
level. Yet
lawmakers,
litigators, and
insurers press
for less dog
ownership. This
must stop. We
must maintain
perspective.
Yes, dogs bite.
But even party
balloons and
bedroom slippers
are more
dangerous.
Addresses: dog
bites - big
danger or
cultural phobia;
the actual
numbers; fear
factors, why
don't dogs hurt
people more
often; what is
aggression; the
current state of
research on dog
bites; legal
liability
questions; why
do we want dogs
anyway; simple
strategies for
reducing dog
bites, more.
